How to Cook Air Fryer Canned Biscuits (Refrigerated Biscuits)

Wow, these are good and crispy! If you like making canned biscuits crispy and flaky, then the air fryer method is perfect! The hot circulating air cooks the biscuits wonderfully and gives a nice crispy texture. To make sure they cook all the way through, you might have to flip them, depending the air fryer style that you have. Wonder why air fried canned biscuits are raw when cooked in the air fryer? It’s because the temperature was too hot/high and you might have to flip them depending on your style of air fryer. Below are our tips and tricks to make sure they cook all the way through with two different styles of air fryers.

Canned Biscuits in Air Fryer Basket Style: Single Layer is Best

The basket style air fryer allows you to cook them all in one layer. So they will all cook evenly and you just need to flip them if needed to make sure they cook on both sides. For most of our basket style tests, we didn’t even need to flip them and they cooked perfectly.

Tips: Refrigerated Canned Biscuits in Oven Style Air Fryer: Two Layers

For the oven style air fryers with multiple trays, try to cook them in one layer at a time. Cook just one rack at a time by using the middle rack position so that they cook more evenly. You still might have to flip them. If you have a small air fryer, you will have to cook them in batches. Or you had store them in the fridge for up to a day raw, then cook them the next day.

  • If you cook two or three racks at a time, the bottom racks are farthest away from the heating element. These biscuits will cook slower and more raw in the center.
  • The top rack closest to the heating element will cook too hot. You’ll burn the outside before the inside cooks.
  • So we suggest when it comes to the oven style, cook one tray at a time in the middle position. Then cook the rest of the biscuits in batches.
  • If you want to cook two racks at a time, then you must rotate the racks during cooking and still flip the biscuits. It’ll work, but we found they still didn’t rise as much as cooking in a single layer. Below are the photos to illustrate our point.
  • Pillsbury Grands Biscuits in the Air Fryer is the most popular brand. But other brands on the market also work with our technique and time.
  • Pro-Tip: here’s our favorite tools to help make air frying easier:
Evo Oil Sprayer
Evo Oil Sprayer

We LOVE Evo Oil Sprayers. Not the prettiest, but they’re functional and spritz oil great! They don’t clog up like many others we’ve bought. There’s different styles, but all seem to have the same great spray head. Works great for grilling!

8.5" Square Blue Silicone Mat
Perforated Silicone Mat

There are Square Mats & Round Mats. These perforated non-stick silicone mats are used to cook food in your air fryer or steamer to minimize sticking. Holes allow hot circulating air to cook the food & keeps the food from sticking.

Perforated Parchment Paper

Parchment sheets are great for your air fryer or bamboo steamer (food tends to stick most on wire basket or tray). Choose from different sizes, shapes, white and brown (unbleached). Holes allow air to cook food evenly.

Problems with cooking canned refrigerated biscuits in Air Fryers

Like we mentioned before, try to cook one layer at the time. Problems with the biscuits not cooking all the way through is because you’re cooking them too hot or not hot enough. The hot circulating fan at the top can burn the tops of the biscuits before they’re cooked all the way though. Also, different air fryers cook at different intensities, so you’ll have to adjust accordingly based on your air fryer. When in doubt, TEST COOK 2 biscuits first. Then you’ll know what temperature works best for your brand of biscuits and style of air fryer.

What if the biscuits are still doughy or raw in the middle?

This could potentially happen if your air fryer cooks hotter than our test kitchen models. If the biscuits are still slightly doughy in the middle, leave them in the turned-off air fryer for about 2-3 minutes to continue cooking in the residual heat. So make sure to close the air fryer doors or basket and leave the in the air fryer with it turned off. Don’t leave them in there for longer than 3 minutes or else they might dry out.

Canned Refrigerated Biscuits in Air Fryer

Air Fryer cooking times will vary a lot depending on your size and style of air fryer. Check the biscuits after the first 6 minutes to make sure it’s cooked to your preferred texture. After cooking in your specific air fryer, you’ll know what time and temp works best for the biscuits.
We suggest cooking them slightly “crisper” or more golden brown on on the outside to make sure the biscuits are cooked all the way through.

Instructions

  • Spray the air fryer basket or racks with oil to keep the biscuits from sticking. We don’t suggest using parchment paper underneath because you want maximum air flow under the biscuits to help them cook all the way though. The parchment paper prevents maximum air flow under the biscuits.
  • Lay biscuits in single layer of air fryer basket or racks. Make sure to space them out so they aren't touching & have room to rise & expand.

For Grand or Large Biscuits (Homemade Buttermilk Style and Flaky Layers style):

  • Air Fry at 330°F/165°C for about 6-7 minutes. Gently wiggle the biscuits to loosen from the baskets.
  • Continue to Air Fry for another 1-3 minutes, or until they are crispy brown and cooked through.
You can also flip the biscuits to finish off during the last 1-3 minutes of air frying (they won't be as pretty, but is neccesary in some air fryers).

For Smaller Size Biscuits (Homemade Buttermilk Style and Flaky Layers Style):

  • Air Fry at 330°F/165°C for 5 minutes. Flip the biscuits and air fry for another 2-4 minutes, or until they are crispy brown and cooked through.

If your air fryer is preheated or if you are cooking multiple batches, you may need to reduce timing by a few minutes (unless preheating is called for in the recipe).
