We’ve had so many readers ask us about brownies in the air fryer. Can you air fry brownies? This is a great question and we did several tests. It was a tough job but our test kitchen was up for the challenge. You’ll be surprised at our results.

Is Air Frying Ideal for Desserts like Quick Breads or Simple Cakes?

Typically desserts are always a challenge in the air fryer because of the hot circulating air. The hot air typically dries out the exterior of the batter while leaving the center raw. Air frying these type of desserts isn’t ideal but brownies can be an exception, as long as you know what you’re getting into.

What Happens When You Air Fryer Brownies?

Like we mentioned above, the center of these quick breads can be raw. But with brownies, many folks like the crispy outside and soft rich inside. So if you’re of the brownie camp that likes crispy and slightly burnt outsides on your brownies, then air frying is an option. Also, since brownies are flat they cook quicker when air fried. So there’s less of a super raw center.

Warning: Tops of Air Fried Brownies are Funny Looking

If you’re wanting the perfectly crisp top with a crackery, papery top then don’t air fry your brownies. But if you don’t care about the look, then the odd looking brownie tops won’t bother you. The hot air blows the brownie batter, making it look like it went through a tornado storm. Check out our photos below in the recipe box! cooling brownies

Are Brownies Cakey or Fudgey?

The best brownie texture is highly subjective and everyone likes something different. The results of the brownie texture depends on so many things: your recipe, what brand of brownie box mix you use and the power of your air fryer. So we suggest investing the couple of dollars by buying a box mix and giving it a try. You need to test it in your specific model of air fryer. Here’s a great article on the origin story of brownies.

We love these baking dishes. They’re size works great for a majority of air fryers.

Baking Pans that are Perfect for Air Frying

We love these 8-inch square baking pans for air frying in oven-style air fryers as well as some larger basket-type air fryers. They don’t have bulky handles which will get in the way for some air fryers.

These style pans are perfect for basket-type air fryers. The handles make it so much easier to take out of the basket.

We tested our brownies with a store bought box brownie mix. The results turned out pretty good. But if you're using a homemade recipe, results can vary. Also, your specific model of air fryer will affect results.

    fudge brownie mix
  • Using a shallow air fryer approved baking dish, line it with foil.
Mix your brownie mix and pour into the foil lined dish.

  • Air fry the brownies at 350°F for about 20 minutes. Using a toothpick, pierce the brownies. If you need more time, add additional 2-3 minutes at a time until brownies are cooked to your liking.
Remove the brownies from the baking dish and allow brownies to cool.

If your air fryer is preheated or if you are cooking multiple batches, you may need to reduce timing by a few minutes (unless preheating is called for in the recipe).
