Best Air Fryer Turkey Burgers Recipe

Why are these turkey burgers so good? We add a secret ingredient. Fish sauce or soy sauce. Yeah these are pretty non-traditional. But the umami flavor you get out of these air fried turkey burger patties is outstanding. Not convinced of using fish sauce, then use soy sauce. And if you’re still not convinced, just use Worcestershire! These ingredients make bland turkey much more flavorful.

{Tips} How to Make Air Fryer Turkey Burgers

  • Use a quality ground turkey meat. The patties will cook with more texture and less mushy. Here’s a great guide to ground turkey.
  • Love garlic or other spices? Add your favorites. Or if you like a smoky spicy flavor patty, add some chipotle and smoked paprika.  
  • Different timings for different shaped patties. Timing will vary a lot because everyone shapes their patties differently. A thicker patty will require longer cooking times.
  • Also timing will vary because every air fryer is different. Some cook hotter than others. But after your first batch, you’ll know what timing is best for your preferred texture on your specific air fryer model. 
  • Make it cheesy. Just add your favorite slice of cheese after the turkey patty is cooked. Air fry for about 1 minute for the cheese to melt. 
  • Warm crisp buns are wonderful! So don’t forget to warm your burger buns in the air fryer.

Healthy Turkey Burger Patties

To make these turkey avocado burger patties even more healthy, don’t serve them on a bread bun. Wrap them in lettuce to make “protein burgers”. This low carb and keto air fryer turkey burger option is still delicious! Or you can serve the turkey patty on a bed of crisp lettuce for another keto friendly turkey patty salad. As long as you add the enough seasonings, the air fryer turkey patties will be delicious regardless of how you serve them!

Air Fryer Turkey Avocado Burgers

Okay, it’s not such a secret anymore but it was when we first started making this years ago. Everyone asked about the wonderful rich and deep umami flavor. They couldn’t believe it when we told them the secret sauce was fish sauce! Don’t be scared of fish sauce. It’s brings a depth of flavor that will keep everyone saying this burger patty is the best they’ve ever had! If fish sauce isn’t up your alley, Worcestershire or soy sauce are great substitutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. (454 g) ground turkey
  • 2 cloves garlic , minced
  • 1 Tablespoon (15 ml) Worcestershire , fish sauce, or soy sauce (fish sauce is our favorite)
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) dried herbs (oregano, thyme, dill, basil, marjoram)
  • 1/2 cup (80 g) minced fresh onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) salt , or to taste
  • Lots of black pepper
  • oil spray , for coating

Burger assembly:

  • 4 Buns
  • 1 avocado , sliced
  • Optional: cheese, radish sprouts, lettuce, tomato, etc.

Instructions 

  • Preheat air fryer at 380°F/193°C for 5 minutes.

  • In bowl, combine turkey, garlic, Worcestershire sauce (or fish sauce or soy sauce), dried herbs, onion, salt and pepper. Mix everything until just combined.

  • Divide and flatten into 4 patties about 4” wide. Spray both sides with oil. If you have a smaller air fryer, you’ll have to cook in two batches.

  • Air Fry at 380°F/193°C for 10-12 minutes, flip after 6 minutes. Cook to your preference or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F/74°C. If your patty is thicker, you many need to cook for a few more minutes.

  • For Turkey Cheeseburgers: add the slices of cheese on top of the cooked patties. Air fry at 380°F/193°C for about 30 seconds to 1 minute to melt the cheese.

  • For best juiciness, cover the patties and let rest for 3 minutes. Warm the buns in the air fryer at 380°F for about 1 minute while patties are resting. Serve on buns, topped with 1/4 avocado and your favorite burger toppings.

If your air fryer is preheated or if you are cooking multiple batches, you may need to reduce timing by a few minutes (unless preheating is called for in the recipe).
