How to Air Fry Tofu to Be Crispy

  • Buy firm or extra firm tofu. The firm texture won’t break apart when you shake or stir the tofu. And you’ll get a nice texture on the outside. Medium or soft tofu won’t work as well and you’ll get a big pile of broken tofu mush if you try to stir it during cooking.
  • Air fry it hot. We like to cook it at 400F to get a nice crisp outside. And it helps minimize any breakage during stirring because the tofu will develop it’s outside crust quick.
  • Drain and squeeze out as much water as possible without breaking the tofu. The less moisture/water the tofu chunks have, the more crisp they will cook.
  • Use your favorite spices. There’s so man possibilities here!

What is the Best Type of Tofu to Air Fry?

Like we mentioned above, firm or extra firm tofu is the best! It’s not too soft and firm enough to hold it’s shape during air frying. Also, as you shake or toss the air fryer cubes, they won’t break apart that easy when they’re extra firm. Don’t buy the very soft or silken tofu because those are better for soups, not air frying. Hope you enjoy this tofu in air fryer recipe!

Ingredients

  • 14 oz. (397 g) firm or extra firm tofu , (1 block) drained
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) lemon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) salt
  • oil spray , for coating
  • Sauce for dipping: soy sauce , bbq sauce, teriyaki sauce, chili garlic sauce

Equipment

Instructions

  • Preheat air fryer at 400°F for 5 minutes.
  • Gently squeeze or press-out excess water from the tofu block. Cut tofu into 1” cubes.
  • Add tofu cubes to bowl. Spray evenly with oil around all sides. Sprinkle half the amount of spices: lemon pepper, garlic powder, and salt evenly around all the tofu cubes. Gently stir or toss. Repeat with another layer of light oil spray and remainder of spices.
  • Air Fry at 400°F for 10 minutes. Gently flip over the tofu cubes or shake the basket so tofu can tumble and turn. Continue to Air Fry for another 10 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Check the texture of the tofu. If you want it more crispy, then Air Fry for additional 5-10 minutes OR until the tofu is to your liking. We like our tofu extra crispy with an outside crust so we’ll cook it for an extra 7 minutes.
  • Allow to slightly cool and dip in your favorite sauce.

If your air fryer is preheated or if you are cooking multiple batches, you may need to reduce timing by a few minutes (unless preheating is called for in the recipe).
