Tips on Making Air Fryer Texas Toast
- Get the bread right. Texas toast is essentially using almost any soft white bread. But the tradition is using a thick cut of white bread, which means buying the large “french bread loaves” at the grocery. There usually are a couple types of French baguettes at our grocery stores. There’s the firm style “baguette” or artisan baguettes. No no, don’t use that. Instead, find the budget friendly soft loaves for around $3. It’s soft, perfectly tender on the inside which lends to a nice crust when air fried. Best of all, you can cut it thick.
- Fresh garlic or garlic powder? Well, if you’re a fan of fresh garlic, then use that for the garlic butter mix. Fresh garlic has a nice “bite” to it and much punchier than garlic powder. But the powder form is much quicker to assemble for the recipe and you still get a great garlic flavor.

- Stir together the 1/4 cup of butter, 2 minced cloves of garlic, 1 Tablespoon of minced parsley, and salt & pepper to taste until well combined.
- Spread garlic butter mix over one face of each bread slice.
- Divide the 1/4 cup of cheese between each of the buttered bread slices, adding the cheese just on one side. Gently press cheese into the buttered bread slices so the cheese doesn’t fly off. Place the slices, cheese side facing up, in the air fryer basket/tray.
- Air Fry at 360°F (182°C) for 4-6 minutes or golden.
- Allow the Texas toast to cool a bit and enjoy!
If your air fryer is preheated or if you are cooking multiple batches, you may need to reduce timing by a few minutes (unless preheating is called for in the recipe).

Storing Instructions for Leftovers
If you have any leftovers, then just store them in the fridge. When ready to re-heat, just air fry them for about 1-2 minutes at 350°F. You can also freeze leftovers and it’s still better than buying the store bought frozen garlic bread.
Don’t meal prep this Texas Toast Garlic Bread, not worth it.
If you think preparing these ahead of time with the butter on them and freezing before cooking, we don’t recommend it. It’s a waste of time. Seriously, this is so easy to put together and air frying the fresh bread just tastes so much better. Instead, what you can do is the prep the garlic butter (compound butter) ahead of time and set it on the counter so it remains soft. That way when you’re craving a slice of this Texas toast garlic bread, just spread the pre-made compound butter over the bread then air fry.
What is Texas Toast?
The history of this simple, humble yet beloved dish starts in Texas, of course! What makes these distinctively different from any garlic bread is the thickness of the bread and the soft tender core. Here’s a great article on the history and story of Texas toast origins.
