Hot Dog Bacon Chips in Air Fryer
Ok, we tried the viral hot dog bacon strips by cooking them in the air fryer. They’re often called hot dog bacon chips. We were curious to see what they actually tasted like and if it’s worth the effort. What are our thoughts? We breakdown the details in our article.

What are Hot Dog Bacon Strips?
They’re the viral social media recipe that seems to be getting mixed reviews. It’s basically thin shaved strips of hot dog, then seasoned and air fried. These hot dog strips are supposed to mimic crispy bacon or be a hot dog version of it. There’s less fat so maybe that’s the appeal that made it viral. It’s super easy to make so why not try it, right? Well we did and it really was super easy.
Are Hot Dog Bacon Strips Tasty?
Our reviews are in and it was a 50/50 mix. These air fryer hot dog bacon strips can be crispy so long as you don’t over air fry them. They can easily dry out and burn. But what about the taste? Well, they definitely do not taste like bacon. So if you’re looking for a bacon replacement, these are not for you. But if you love hot dogs and want a different version of it, then yes these hot dog strips are for you. They’re crispy, well seasoned and a nice low carb snack. They are a tasty and easy snack.

Air Fryer Hot Dog Bacon Strips or Bacon Chips are Great Low Carb Keto Snack
Don’t think of these as normal bacon because if you do, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. But if you’re already a fan of hot dogs, then these are fantastic keto friendly snacks. Think of them as hot dog jerky strips: dry, crispy and flavorful. That’s how we enjoyed these when we were testing them. If we just think of these as jerky strips, then they become more enjoyable and are great as a snack.
Warning: Don’t do this if you’re making these “bacon” strips
We all love hot dogs and with so many hot dog variety options out on the market, we would think any hot dog would work. Nope. Here’s our tips for making these:
- Don’t use cheese filled hot dogs! Or any hot dog with stuffing in it! You’ll get oozy messy ingredients during air frying.
- Choose thicker hot dogs or even some simple cooked sausage dogs or kielbasa. The wider the hot dog, the easier it will be to peel the hot dog into thin strips. The really small hot dogs might need hand cutting with a knife, but make sure they’re consistently the same thickness. If you have uneven thicknesses, then during air frying they will cook very differently.
- Some like to use a mandoline to cut the hot dogs into strips, but they tend to freak us out. We’ve seen too many sliced fingers with a mandoline. If you do use one, make sure to use cut-resistant gloves.
- Check out all the recipe and timing details in the recipe box below.

Air Fryer Hot Dog Strips (Bacon Chips)
Ingredients
- 3 hot dogs
- 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) black pepper , or to taste
- Oil spray
Equipment
- Mandoline optional
- Cut-Resistant gloves optional
Instructions
- Peel the hot dogs into thin strips using a vegetable peeler or mandoline (if using a mandoline, be very careful and make sure to use cut resistant gloves.)
- Place hot dog strips in a bowl or plate. Sprinkle the 1/2 teaspoon paprika and 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder evenly over the hot dog strips.
- Lightly spray the strips with oil then stir the strips.
- Add about 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper evenly over the hot dog strips and stir.
- Lay the seasoned hot dog strips in a single layer in air fryer basket or air fryer rack.
- Air fry at 380°F for 5 minutes. Check and turn the hot dog strips.
- Continue for another 3-5 min (or longer to get the strips crispy. This depends on the type of hot dog and how thick it was cut).
If your air fryer is preheated or if you are cooking multiple batches, you may need to reduce timing by a few minutes (unless preheating is called for in the recipe).
